Who Are We?
The J.W. Cooper Community Center is located in the center of Shenandoah. The Community Center’s mission is to save and restore the former J.W. Cooper High School to its original condition while simultaneously providing needed benefits to the Shenandoah community and surrounding areas by providing a food bank (Beverly Mattson Memorial Food Bank), clothing, books and toys for those in need. Future plans for a theater, youth center, business incubator, board room (named for Jerry Wolman), swimming pool and storage space are ongoing thanks to local volunteer efforts.
The J.W. Cooper High School was purchased in 2009 to save the borough the cost of demolition and rescue the historic landmark structure from neglect and vandalism. The goal of providing an area for business start-ups, a potential public swimming pool (oldest in a PA High School), an 800 seat theater/auditorium, offices, food band and various human services has been the goal of the small group of volunteers struggling to accomplish the mission.
On February 12, 2014 J.W. Cooper Community Center incorporated and was grated tax exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code and had previously been determined eligible for the National Registry.
The Beverly Mattson Memorial Food Bank has been providing free food and clothing for the past 9 years and is accessible every day, if needed, by texting 570-900-5464 or 267-418-8975.
